I have recently completed listening to a great audiobook called Legacy by James Kerr. This is a book about leadership within the context of the NZ All Blacks team.
It has been a great education for me to consider the lessons in the book and how they apply to our college, our staff, our parents and most importantly, our students. One of the first leadership ideas discussed in the book is referred to as “Sweep the Sheds”. The basic premise behind this is that the All Blacks team do not rely on others to look after them. Their leadership group within the squad actually sweep the sheds after training and in doing so, demonstrate humility to the young ones in their team and that they are never above anyone else.
I love this simple, yet extremely powerful example of leadership. How many times have we swept the sheds recently and shown genuine humility?
