I feel the most important role of a teacher is student engagement, in the form of students being engaged in their learning and the less obvious form of my being engaged in a student’s interests. I always make sure to find out what appeals to a student and what makes them happy. Whether it is sport, video games using CSGO resources online, art, music or something I have never heard of before I’m keen to learn about it and engage in it. This is my most important role as a teacher for it allows me to not only plan tasks that are relevant to the personal experience of students but also to make genuine connections with students which makes teaching a fun task rather than something formidable.
There is a topic that is consistently coming up at the moment that is of huge interest to myself, fellow teachers, coaches and of course students and that is the 2015 Kanga Cup!
The Kanga Cup is a major event in the junior sporting landscape and is one of the biggest junior sporting events in Canberra and perhaps Australia. I have had great times at the Kanga Cup in a variety of roles and to go down to a tournament with a group of boys who I talk to in the classroom everyday is an experience that I’m most looking forward to.
For students who have never been you are in for a treat. A week of pure football in a competitive and fun environment. Students will have the chance to play against not only interstate teams but international clubs, an amazing opportunity for everyone involved.
I look forward to engaging with my students throughout the week over both a shared love of football and their other interests……. even if that includes a little dubstep music.
