As a person who devotes a large portion of their life to food (more so than most) it amuses me to watch eating fads come and go. It’s not a secret that the majority of us eat far too much processed foods in our diet, but there does seem to be a recent shift in our thinking for the better.
It’s great that a lot of us have jumped on the healthy bandwagon (myself included), and try to eat foods that we know to be “good” for us. But the catch is while consuming a tablespoon of coconut oil or a bunch of kale now and then has good benefits. Eating large amounts of these foods on a daily basis can actually do the opposite.
I always try to encourage healthy eating, and I feel that Ash, Jodi and I do a fantastic job of offering a wide choice of fresh, healthy options in the Cafe. I don’t know of any other college where students get offered roasted sweet potato, blanched snow peas, olives (yes, kids actually eat olives), salads, and a daily hot meal.
I believe it’s important to remember that fad diets come and go, but as long as we eat sensibly and eat highly processed foods sparingly, it’s ok to eat everything in moderation.
