On Monday Marty, Soozie, Sally and I accompanied Stage 4 on an excursion to the Powerhouse Museum. Our focus was sustainability with students undertaking three workshops which all looked at different ways we can reduce our ecological footprint.
In the first workshop Sustainable Solutions students were informed about the depletion of our natural resources and how we can minimise the impact humans have on the planet. They were provided with materials to create their own biodegradable plastic.
The second workshop focused on different materials and what makes up each one. Students considered the tensile strength of different plastics and tested the properties of a number of materials.
The final workshop was a tour of the Ecologic Exhibition. Students were informed about the impact of climate change and the ways in which we can minimise our individual impact. Within the exhibit there was a sustainable house made completely from recycled materials. The excursion gave Stage 4 a lot to think about and helped shape the research students are currently undertaking for their Geography project. I would like to commend the class on their behaviour on the day, they were polite, well mannered and respectful.
Over the coming weeks Stage 4 students will be writing, planning and producing a play on sustainability and climate change which they will perform at the end of term. The production will be an all-hands-on-deck exercise with students taking responsible for writing the script, designing and making their props and costumes and acting in the production. Please keep Monday 8th December free for the Stage 4 production.
