I heard a story a long time ago about the importance of mothers putting themselves first. It’s a story that I have been thinking about a lot of late. So, for all the women out there, this story is for you.
First you need to think about a pie. The type of pie doesn’t matter, though I am sure everyone is imagining a deliciously healthy sugar-free pie. Now you need to divide the pie in any way you choose to feed your family and loved ones. Most women usually do the following – first they cut equal pieces for each of their children, a piece for their spouse or partner, pieces for each of their parents, and maybe some for any other family members or close friends. Then the woman who divided the pie will take the final piece for herself, after she is satisfied she has provided nourishment for those she loves. Usually that final piece of the pie is quite small. Adequate, but small.
Is adequate enough? How long do you think adequate can sustain you?
Here’s the thing. Women are natural born carers. In order for us to care for those we love, we need to first nourish ourselves. We can’t give to others when we have nothing left to give.
So, get that super healthy pie and take the first piece for yourself. Enjoy it. Then divide the rest of the pieĀ as usual amongst your loved ones. Everyone still gets pie, and you are left with enough nourishment to keep giving to your family.

True but one us women, (mums, aunty’s, sisters, grandmother’s) forget. A nice reminder that we like to have that sweet yummy pie too….
